This body of work is a mixed-media collage installation of multiracial people, specifically those who are of mixed minority-majority race. I started this project by conducting open-ended interviews with mixed race students, gathering quotes and taking their portraits. Through this project, I wish to represent the diverse experience of biracial people in their own words, thereby proposing a more diverse view of the world, highlighting and humanizing the experiences of those who tend to fall between the cracks of racial discourse. I also wish to find common ground with others who, like myself, feel like they do not have a place on either side of racial discourse. As echoed by these students, our experiences are not just a combination of two experiences, but distinct in themselves, accompanied by their own unique challenges and joys.

Through my research I have found that mixed race people are in a particularly special position to bridge the gap between majority-minority groups, in our context at Wheaton and in broader race conversations.
Multi-racial people offer a lot to these conversations because they uniquely understand experiences across minority-majority boundaries. In this way, mixed race people have innate skills that should be highlighted and tapped into. Mixed race people are key components in building racially diverse friendships. I have seen this in my own life and in the lives of many of my friends. I believe that we can only accomplish true inter-cultural unity through lasting friendships where cultures are realized and not just theorized.
